LMIGA focuses on traffic operations along major corridors in the greater Chicago region to improve safety and mobility. This goal is realized by interagency communication and coordination, improvement projects, training efforts, and regionwide planning.

From 1993 to 2006, the organization was known as the Gary-Chicago-Milwaukee (GCM) ITS Priority Corridor. Since 2006, the focus grew beyond traffic congestion toward broader interstate operations, and the boundaries were expanded to include southwest Michigan and the area east and south of Madison, Wisconsin.
